Plumbing Emergency? Here's What to Do Before We Arrive

Connor Warren, AquaTec Plumbing March 21, 2026 4 min read

Plumbing emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time — and the first few minutes matter. Whether it's a burst pipe in the middle of the night or a toilet that won't stop overflowing, knowing what to do (and what not to do) can be the difference between a quick cleanup and thousands of dollars in water damage. Here's our guide for staying calm and minimizing damage while you wait for help.

1. Shut Off the Water

Your first move should always be to stop the source. Every home has a main water shut-off valve — usually near where the water line enters the house, in a basement, utility room, or near the water meter. If you're not sure where yours is, take a few minutes today to find it; during an emergency is not the time to be searching. For an isolated issue, like an overflowing toilet, you can often shut off the smaller valve located directly behind or beneath the fixture.

2. Cut the Power if Water Is Near Electrical Outlets or Appliances

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If flooding is approaching outlets, electrical panels, or appliances, shut off power to that area at the breaker — but only if you can do so safely without stepping into water.

3. Contain What You Can

Use towels, buckets, and any waterproof containers to limit how far the water spreads. Move furniture, electronics, and valuables out of the affected area if it's safe to do so. Every minute counts when it comes to preventing damage to flooring, drywall, and belongings.

4. Don't Try to "Fix" the Problem Yourself

It's tempting to grab tools and attempt a repair, but in an emergency situation this can often make things worse — especially with pressurized lines or sewage backups. Stick to shutting off water and limiting the spread; leave the diagnosis and repair to a licensed professional.
